About the Play
Bisexual Sadness is about exactly what it sounds like. Faye is getting married to a man she truly loves — and part of her wishes he were a woman, not because she doesn't love him, but because loving him means fighting to stay part of the queer community she calls home. As her best friend/ex, her sister, and her sister's child all become part of her orbit, the play becomes a warm, messy, genuinely funny exploration of identity, belonging, and love.
Content note: This play includes strong language, staged intimacy (kissing), and frank conversation and references regarding sexuality and sexual activity, in addition to themes of gender and sexual identity. Please reach out with any questions.
Rehearsals
Rehearsals will begin the week of September 28 and run through October 24, weeknights and Saturdays. Tech rehearsals begin October 27 at Trinity Street Playhouse. A detailed rehearsal and tech schedule will be distributed no later than our first rehearsal. Not all performers will be called for every rehearsal.
Please list any known conflicts on the sign-up form. As a policy, conflicts after October 11 will not be approved, though exceptions may be considered at the production team's discretion.
Performances
November 5 – 22
Thursdays–Saturdays at 7:30pm
Sundays at 2:30pm
All performances will take place at Trinity Street Playhouse.
Performers must be available for all scheduled performances.
This is a non-union production; each performer will receive a stipend of $650.
Roles to Be Cast
Age ranges below describe the characters, not the performers — if you feel you can believably portray a role, we encourage you to submit. This play deals with specificity of gender and sexual identity; casting will keep this in mind, but we welcome performers of all identities to audition. When in doubt, please defer toward auditioning, or reach out with questions.
The roles of FAYE and LILLIAN are pre-cast.
ALEX: Male-presenting, late 20s-mid 30s - Faye’s fiancé. Gentle. Kind. Deep inner strength. Alex is very sweet and very funny.
GENEVIEVE: Female-presenting, late 20s–mid 30s - Faye’s ex. Faye’s best friend. Academically accomplished. A butch dreamboat. Deeply, inherently masculine. Comfortable with that.
MIRANDA: Female-presenting, 40s - Faye’s older sister. A wreck, right now. Until Patrick left her, Miranda was a kumbaya earth-mother with a side of punk zinester. She doesn’t care about taking up space with her feelings. Indeed, she cannot help it.
NAOMI: Assigned female at birth (AFAB), 13-14 - Faye’s niece. Questioning her/their gender. Questioning everything. Extremely perceptive. Deeply, at times brilliantly, creative. A little obsessive. Performers 14 and older who can believably portray this age are strongly encouraged to apply. This role involves some mature content — details and guardian information are provided during sign-up.
Audition Sides & Full Script
Performers may be asked to read from any of the sides below. Please familiarize yourself with them in advance; memorization is not required. Performers are welcome to review the full script for context; as this is a new play, it may change before rehearsal or performance.
Audition Sign-Up
Auditions are in-person only (no video submissions at this time). Complete the form below, including an optional headshot/resume — you'll select your audition time slot there as well.
If you're a minor auditioning for Naomi, the form will ask for a parent/guardian email so we can send a consent form ahead of your audition.
The deadline to sign up is Friday, August 14 at 5pm.
If you have any questions or concerns, please contact us at jarrottproductions@gmail.com.
