Introduction
JP Founding Artistic Director David Jarrott crossed paths with the multi-talented David Kroll in the 1980’s Austin media scene, but he remembers vividly seeing him on stage in ZACH Theatre’s 1993 production of EQUUS. Austin audiences knew him long before that through local tv commercials he produced int he 1970’s—these were commercials with no budgets for actors, so David ended up casting himself frequently. Since that time he’s been in short videos, stage plays, feature films, and TV episodes; he’s voiced troops, wizards and gnomes for CD-ROM games (remember those?).
More recently acting in the roles of lawyer, video director, and marketer, David says he has most excelled at one particular thing: being a native Austinite. Now retired from the State Bar of Texas, he still freelances as a layout artist and occasional performer, most recently appearing in JP’s Deathtrap, as well as in ZACH’s Roe and Jersey Boys.
From David
There is no community like a theatrical community, and Jarrott Productions is an exemplary member of that community for Austin.
David Jarrott and I first met decades ago while working in local radio and television. Even then I noticed we shared a wicked sense of humor. (He had custody of it Monday through Friday, I got weekends.) We reconnected in 2016 through Jarrott Productions, and I was immediately impressed by the talent and polish of the company’s early shows.
Soon, as a behind-the-scenes assistant, a front-of-house volunteer, and an onstage performer, I marveled at how much expertise, invention, and sheer playfulness the company brought to bear with each endeavor. (Let’s never forget: it’s called a “play!”)
There is no community like a theatrical community, and Jarrott Productions is an exemplary member of that community for Austin. The interaction of artists, the energy, the learning from each other, discovering and refining all the elements into a whole — I wouldn’t trade it for any other creative outlet, and Jarrott Productions delivers. It’s obvious to me that David and his cohorts love what they do, and that brings me back time and again. I celebrate their 10 years and wish them many, many more.
